We booked the entire Wheatlands Lodge as we were getting married at Fairbank Farm and wanted it to be the perfect base for our wedding party. From our very first visit to the end of our stay, Mike and Lynn were always on hand with helpful advice and recommendations, and they made us feel so welcome. Our stay was exactly what we had hoped for, if not more. It was the perfect place for our wedding party to stay, get ready, and enjoy breakfast together. All of the rooms are stunning, and the whole lodge was perfect for what we needed. It is also walking distance to Windermere station and very close to all the Windermere amenities. We couldn’t recommend Wheatlands Lodge, Mike and Lynn highly enough! Adam & Becky x

A central location in Windermere/ Bowness (walking distance and easy access to bus routes). Plenty of places to eat and drink nearby. Mike and Lynn were friendly and professional hosts - they helped us with any queries and interested in our day out. Immaculate rooms - clean and nicely decorated. Tea and coffee facilities (wine glasses) were a nice touch too. If requested, rooms will be ‘made up’ and given fresh towels, even with short stays. We liked the fact that this was an adult only guest house as it reduced noise in the early hours. They do offer a breakfast package (taken in a dining room) which we did not have included this time but would consider if/when we come back. Free parking space was perfect in a busy town. We would love to visit again.

We stayed for two nights at Wheatlands Lodge and overall had a good stay. The staff were a particular highlight — everyone we dealt with was friendly, welcoming and engaging, and communication before our arrival was quick and helpful. They were also very accommodating when we needed to adjust our arrival time. The staff were particularly helpful when I accidentally left my watch in the room after checking out. The owner actually gave me his car keys so that I could get back into the room to retrieve it, which I thought was an exceptionally kind and trusting gesture. Our room was very clean and cosy, with a comfortable bed, coffee machine, kettle and bottled water. The shower was also good. That said, I found the room a little on the small side and, while it was pleasant, there wasn’t really anything about it that made me think “wow, this feels like a five-star hotel”. It was simply a good, clean and comfortable room. There were also relatively few toiletries provided — hand wash and a combined shampoo/shower gel — although the products themselves were perfectly good. Breakfast was very nice and there was a decent variety of options. You select a breakfast time between 8:30 and 9:30 and let the hotel know what you’d like the day before, which I had no issue with. At the advertised £17 per person, however, I think I would have expected slightly more in terms of portion size. The biggest issue for us was the temperature of the room. There was no air conditioning, which I wouldn’t necessarily expect in a Lake District hotel, but the room became very warm. Unfortunately, our room was also directly next to an outdoor light which seemed to attract a lot of moths. When we opened the window, a large moth came into the room, and we subsequently found another one the following morning. As someone who really doesn’t like moths, this meant we couldn’t comfortably leave the window open, which made the heat more difficult to deal with and affected my sleep on the first night. A fan was provided for the second night, which did help, although the fan itself was quite dusty and could have done with being cleaned before being given to a guest. In hindsight, I think a fan in the room from the outset would have made a big difference. The other disappointment was the lack of luggage storage after checkout. We were travelling by train rather than car, so this was quite inconvenient. We had to walk back up to the station and pay £10 to store our suitcases for a few hours. I was particularly surprised by this given the hotel’s five-star status, and also because TripAdvisor lists ‘baggage storage’ as a facility. Had we known beforehand that this wasn’t available, it may have affected our choice of accommodation. The location was good for us, and the hotel itself is pleasant, clean and comfortable. There is also a lovely communal garden area, although we didn’t get the opportunity to make much use of it. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the staff were genuinely excellent. However, given the hotel’s official five-star rating and the number of awards and positive reviews it has received, I personally expected a little more in terms of the overall experience and attention to detail. The warm room and lack of luggage storage were particularly significant for us, especially as we were travelling by train. I’d still say Wheatlands Lodge is a nice place to stay, but for us the experience wasn’t quite exceptional enough to justify five stars, and there are plenty of other accommodation options in Windermere that I’d consider next time.
