A great location, eminently walkable to York Minster and many shopping and dining places. The main downtown area of York is itself quite walkable, as the (old) city walls enclose a square mile. We were there as part of a tour so alas, did not receive cookies. Breakfast was good. The hotel itself is a collection of older (historic?) buildings. Unfortunately, because of that, our experience would have been a lot better if we hadn't been there during a heat wave. They're in the process of adding air conditioning to the rooms (which few places in England have, historically) but most of the rooms didn't have it, leading to a lot of hot people. Somehow it was more frustrating that the units were in the rooms and seemingly had inspection done, but weren't activated (couldn't be turned on). Through an accident of availability, we had a two-room family suite, which was up two flights of stairs and had two skylights that opened, which only helped cool us down a little. The a/c turned on, a welcome blessing the first night, but by the time we came back from a day of touring, it had dripped into our room and soaked a good deal of the carpet. I'm not sure if it was hooked up wrong or just condensing because it was so hot outside.

Appreciate I have only provided 3* - the hotel was fine for our stay, but was an average hotel, some good, some compromised elements. Firstly, our check in experience was good, Tophan on reception was super helpful. We temporarily parked our car in the car park and unloaded whilst Tophan sorted our stay out. We chose not to use the car park as it looked full (limited spaces) and we could park it at our Son’s, saving the £25 a night rather than risking getting a space (first come first served). There is a nearby carpark which is similarly priced. Location is good, just by the ancient city wall and therefore only a short walk into town. The room was on the small side. It looked out into the internal courtyard which turned out to be a bonus as the air conditioning unit was turned off (confusing), therefore we slept with the window open (the hotel is next to a fairly busy road - recommend trading a potential view of the ancient wall for an internal room so you can have some quiet whilst you are sleeping. Luckily it wasn’t too warm. There was a fan in the room which helped. Bathroom was compact, with a shower hose over the bath. The route to our room was complicated, up and down small flights of stairs after getting off the lift on the first floor. Luckily our room was next door to a flight of stairs that took us to the carpark - a short walk to the hotel entrance took us to reception /breakfast. Breakfast was a ok - pretty standard, on comparison to a budget hotel breakfast. WiFi signal was good in the room and restaurant but the throughput was poor.
