I do not normally write reviews but on this occasion felt I should give credit where credit is due. Having lived in hotels for 30 years I have a vast a varied experience. I have stayed in York several times for business and pleasure and recently decided on a family weekend to York. Knowing what parking is like in York (or the cost of using a public car park is), this factored in our selection as well as the fact we wanted a family room at a reasonable price. I stumbled across the Mercure Fairfield Manor Hotel at a fair price and whilst slightly out of the City Center, it had a bus stop right outside and a Park & Ride a 2 minute drive away which is £4 per adult return. That said, an Uber is only around £10 each way which was more convenient for us being a family of 3. I read the review prior about the hotel being dated and yes, it could do with sprucing up but then the price will increase as well no doubt. But, the hotel is clean and comfortable which is all you really need and the staff very friendly and cannot do enough. We had Breakfast both mornings which again was superb, great selection, hot and fresh even though it was a buffet style and the staff were very attentive and went above and beyond getting my Daughter pancakes when they overheard us asking for them as this is a weekend treat. Bedroom was spacious, no air conditioning but there was a fan which was suitable even though it was one of the hottest weekends of the year. The room also had a fridge which was ideal for keeping our drinks chilled. I thoroughly recommend this hotel. Some people are a bit naïve when it comes to star ratings and expect it to be the quality of the hotel which it is not, it is based on facilities. I would definitely stay here again, great location (far enough out but not too far), great food, staff, free carpark set in nice grounds at a price which offered great value for money (booking direct gave us the best price with Breakfast included).

Sadly the rooms lacked air conditioning which made sleeping almost impossible, despite fan being provided. The hotel should make this a priority. Evening meals at a reasonable price were limited in choice, and having 10% service charge added to the bill was not right. We ate elsewhere for the rema… more

Sadly the rooms lacked air conditioning which made sleeping almost impossible, despite fan being provided. The hotel should make this a priority. Evening meals at a reasonable price were limited in choice, and having 10% service charge added to the bill was not right. We ate elsewhere for the remaining four nights.

We always stay here on a Friday night for 1 night before the races,we liked it last year and decided to come back again,as the location is ideal for us not too far to drive to York Races. We arrived late Friday afternoon we had 2 rooms which were ready as we arrived late afternoon,the young lady on reception on Friday with the long dark hair was so lovely,friendly and welcoming. Now I agree with the other reviews the hotel itself is lovely but the rooms are in desperate need of a refurbishment. The toilet in our room was dirty underneath I had to clean it myself and the water in the sink was really slow to go down definitely a blockage there.We went to a restaurant just down the road within walking distance for our evening meal we didn’t eat at the hotel,but we did have a drink in the bar when we returned.The beds were comfortable and thank goodness there was a fan in the room. Breakfast as last year was excellent and good quality(not cheap sausage) we always enjoy our breakfast here.If anything runs out they are quick to replenish items. Check out was 11:15am which was perfect for us as we were leaving for the races around that time. Didn’t interact with the different lady on reception when leaving as you just put your room keys in the box. We were on the 1st floor which can be noisy with people passing. This hotel is ideal for a short stay,plenty of parking,& good value for money.

“Tired and rooms in need of refurbishment.”

Nice location and lobby area comfortable and well presented, excellent breakfast but room was a bit of a let down. The bathroom had a very unpleasant odour and room carpet was stained, al furniture was very tired and in need of refurbishment.
