“Fine for the price paid, except the Wine”

We have been to several Best Western Hotels with our Labrador and saw this on a special deal. The room was adequate but as with many older hotels they tend to have a shower over a very narrow bath which, as you get older, is not good ! A bath also uses much more water than a shower and if the bath is removed it can accommodate a nice large shower with glass walk-in panel. However, to update hotels to this is expensive so most come with standard bath. We had our laid back Labrador with us who has stayed in many hotels and our room in the adjoining stable block was a good size overlooking the gardens and beyond. We booked this in order to swim but upon arrival the pool was closed so we only used this on one day. It is a very small pool so six people swimming is more than enough especially if they do the crawl !! The first evening we had a meal in the room next to Reception which had a limited menu and the food was fine but one glass of rose wine cost £9 which is extortionate. We have travelled the World and even in one of the top hotels have never paid this much for an ordinary glass of wine. So the next evening we walked up to the Pub at the top of the lane. Unfortunately they weren’t serving food but we were aware of this so ate elsewhere earlier and just had drinks. The main road at the top of the lane is very busy so caution is needed when trying to cross the road to the pub. We weren’t allowed in the main dining room or breakfast room with our dog but breakfast was served to us in a big room overlooking the golf course, which we were more than happy with. We have found that in several BW Hotels we have been able to have breakfast separately in a lovely room overlooking a view thanks to Bentley. He also likes the black pudding and sausage and occasionally is given some together with a biscuit. Apart from the extortionate price of a glass of wine the other very annoying thing was while we were eating our evening meal in the bar, as we weren’t allowed in the restaurant with our dog, a ‘Manager’ in a suit and large bag came in when the TV was on and changed the channel to American football. Very rude. When he departed shortly afterwards he left the channel on and as we didn’t know how to change it we also left. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to tell him how rude this was. Hotels of this age badly need a refurb which is a very costly affair but by charging extortionate prices for drinks and being rude to customers many will not return so under occupancy is a problem for many.

First impressions were a bit mixed-near empty car park, exterior a bit shabby and strange welcome on reception but it did improve! Booked a double superior room but as we were early we had a drink, checked the lunch menu and decided to eat elsewhere and stay in for evening meal. Checked in just before 3 and had a double superior room overlooking the golf course, this is in the newer building. Door lock didn’t work so ended up in the room next door (room 50) which was pleasant-clean, enough room, plenty of wardrobe space as well as a proper iron and folding ironing board. Went into the spa which had been refurbished so again, no complaints on cleanliness. It’s not overly equipped but did the job-two hot tubs, a combined steam/sauna and an ice bath as well as an outdoor hot tub. Plenty of chairs/loungers and over 2.5 hours there were only two other couples in after an hour so it was very peaceful. Food is in the room near reception, which looks like a staff canteen but was forgiven as the meal was perfect-we went for pork belly and fish, both great taste. We saw about three other guests about so had a quiet overnight. The gym was empty and had two treadmills, steppers and bikes as well as free weights and resistance machines. Breakfast was in the proper dining room which would have been a good setting for the evening meal. Again, cooked breakfast was perfect and plentiful, also a small selection of pastries and cereal as well as fruit. There are lots of areas which could be improved here, small things like paper menus, empty corridors and some parts a bit rundown but overall a decent place to go.
