“Wedding at the amazing Higher Trapp”

We had our wedding at this wonderful hotel. It should have been last year, but due to family circumstances we had to postpone. The team couldn’t do enough to help. “Birthday weekend”

Excellent staff especially Sheila the front of house staff that kept us all informed about the meals being delayed due to a mishap in the kitchen. She was attentive and caring to all the residents in the Fitzy bar. The whole stay was lovely nothing to much trouble by all the staff .

“Pleasant short all inclusive stay.”

Pleasant 2 night all inclusive stay at Higher Trapp - with afternoon tea and wine tasting as extras . (Accompanied by our dog). Some of the reviews re the accommodation in the annex aren't exactly encouraging and we weren't able to upgrade; because guests with dogs are accommodated in the annex (Parkers Lodge), so I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there was a little mold on the rim of the shower screen and there was some minor damage in just a couple of places (a door trim and the wardrobe plinth). Average, but perfectly acceptable. Bed was comfy. Generally light, bright and clean. Our room (23) was fine. The welcome at reception was really warm, friendly and helpful. Although the afternoon tea didn't look the most spectacular - it was very fresh and delicious... especially the cheesecake. A 2 course dinner was included from a menu with 4 choices of starter and mains. You can pay a small surcharge for choices from the main menu. It was explained that the menu was in the process of changing from the winter menu so some options weren't available. I would suggest 'sauce on the side' for chicken wings starter and avoid the rag pudding unless you're Desperate Dan! It was nice - but HUGE! Like the reception staff, the restaurant staff did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. We ate in the lounge on the first night - as the dogs aren't allowed in the bar/restaurant at meal time. However the lounge is actually far 'grander' than the bar/restaurant - which we didn't feel was anything special. Whilst sat on low wall outside the lodge as night fell, my husband was thrilled to spot a tawny owl. Due to lack of light pollution most guests also saw the Aurora. A bench or two would have been a welcome touch. The gardens are gorgeous and the view is spectacular both from the hotel terrace and from the lodge. I would have preferred some shade but puzzlingly there are no sun parasols. Stunning views and birdsong accompanied the walk to breakfast (we went via the garden). The woodland flowers were beautiful. If you are unsteady on your feet, the incline on the drive might be a little steep however parking is on two levels, outside the lodge and up outside the hotel - so you could take the very short drive up in bad weather. Breakfast was fine. Help yourself to tea, orange juice, coffee, yoghurt and cereals. Some fresh fruit - but not a lot. We chose a cooked breakfast which would have benefited from tomato and mushroom - although it did include black pudding. It was hot - and a sausage for the dog was offered. Toast machine and lots of individual jam choices. I'd give wine tasting a miss in future - it was just a quiz 🤣... but in fairness the Restaurant Manager was busy with a wedding and it may not have been the full regular format. It wasn't expensive so we weren't that fussed. On our second evening we had dinner on the terrace - not quite what we had in mind when partying wedding guests spilled out - but a helpful member of staff helped us 'hang on' to our table outside. We paid extra for medium sirloin steak but sadly it was VERY rare - almost blue. Too rare for me. We elected to have breakfast the next day on the terrace again due to the lovely weather. Generally the food was 'OK' - but I wouldn't rave about it. By far the best feature of this hotel are the staff who made time to engage with guests and responded to every request with a smile and a genuine desire to help. Plus the gardens and views - which are spectacular. It has character - but the tired, worn and saggy dining chairs all need replacing IMHO. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous. All told we had a very pleasant stay.
