  • Yes, guests at Swansea Valley Holiday Cottages have highlighted that: My husband and I stayed at Plas Cilybebyll on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th July 2026 as part of a friend's 50th birthday celebrations, and it was memorable for all the right reasons. Plas Cilybebyll is a magnificent historic manor house that effortlessly combines old-world glamour with modern comfort. Think soaring ceilings, grand staircases with polished wooden handrails, beautiful stained-glass windows, sparkling chandeliers and elegant reception rooms, all sympathetically updated for twenty-first-century living. I stayed in the Louisa Room, which was beautifully furnished in pale blue and white. It was clean and fresh, with a comfortable super-king bed that ensured two excellent nights' sleep. One tiny detail that delighted me was the design of the drawer handles—they reminded me of the crystals from Richard O'Brien's The Crystal Maze! It's such a small thing, but it perfectly reflects the individuality and charm found throughout the house. One of the highlights of our stay was exploring the manor itself. Each of the nine bedrooms has its own distinct character, there are several bathrooms, multiple libraries, and much to my delight a secret door hidden within one of the bookcases. Discovering little surprises like this made wandering around the house enormous fun. As Plas Cilybebyll is self-catering, we spent Friday evening chatting and preparing food together in the vast kitchen. It was well equipped with everything we needed, from cookware and utensils to plenty of crockery and cutlery, making catering for a large group possible. While exploring, I noticed a photograph of the acclaimed Welsh actor Michael Sheen displayed on one wall. A quick internet search revealed he'd filmed a quirky music video in the very same kitchen, playing a man obsessed with a toaster! It was one of many unexpected discoveries that added to the character of the house. I also enjoyed browsing books written by a local author about the fascinating history of Plas Cilybebyll, giving me a greater appreciation of the remarkable building we were staying in. In quieter moments during my stay, I learned a little about the manor's past. The Welsh word Plas translates roughly as "manor", "hall" or "mansion", while Cil often refers to a secluded corner or retreat. The estate's recorded history stretches back to the early 1500s, passing through generations of notable Welsh families before being remodelled during the Victorian era with its striking French château-style façade. Like many great country houses, it later experienced changing fortunes, making its survival and restoration all the more impressive. On Saturday, my husband and I followed the Plas Farm Trail, a pleasant walk through woodland and open fields where we spotted sheep, cattle, numerous birds and even a rather startled frog. The route was well signposted throughout, although sensible footwear is advisable if it's been raining! Back at the manor, we explored the beautiful grounds, including the walled garden, mature trees, interesting stonework and statues. It was also encouraging to see the owners investing in sustainability projects, including solar panels and hydroelectric power generated from the stream running through the estate. While we chose to explore the countryside, many of our friends made full use of the excellent leisure facilities, including the indoor heated swimming pool, tennis court and games room. A cedar wood sauna was also nearing completion and already smelt absolutely wonderful. There was certainly no shortage of things to do. The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly Saturday evening's birthday celebration. We utilised the separate private party venue, which provided a fantastic space with its own bar, comfortable seating areas, ping-pong and pool table. After enjoying delicious catered food, we spent the evening eating, drinking, laughing, dancing and celebrating together. It was exactly the sort of occasion that will be talked about for years to come. On Sunday, before reluctantly heading home, we enjoyed a group barbecue using the outdoor facilities, which was a perfect (and much appreciated!) way to recover after the previous night's festivities. What impressed me most about Plas Cilybebyll is that it isn't part of a large hotel chain or holiday company. It's a family-owned business that has clearly been restored with enormous care, passion and respect for its remarkable history. The owners have created somewhere that feels genuinely special rather than commercially manufactured. Our weekend was unforgettable, and Plas Cilybebyll played a huge part in making it so. It was the perfect venue for a milestone birthday, but I can equally imagine it being ideal for large family gatherings, anniversaries, weddings, reunions or simply bringing generations together under one roof. If you're looking for somewhere with history, grandeur, character and excellent facilities, I cannot recommend Plas Cilybebyll highly enough. We left with wonderful memories and every hope of returning one day.
