I recently stayed at the Wayfinder Newport for one night. Overall, my stay was fine—certainly not bad, but not quite great either. There are a few things prospective guests should know. Some are easily fixable; others are simply quirks you may be willing to overlook in exchange for an otherwise pleasant stay. The experience began with confusion before I even got out of the car. The hotel entrance is surprisingly difficult to find. We mistakenly pulled into what appeared to be a driveway, only to find ourselves driving over rocks and grass and entering the parking lot the wrong way. The exterior of the property is not particularly attractive, and its location across from an odd, seemingly abandoned Newport Casino doesn't do it any favors. Still, appearances aren't everything. Thankfully, the lobby makes a much stronger first impression. It's stylish, thoughtfully designed, and immediately establishes the boutique-hotel vibe the property is aiming for. At check-in, I was initially told my room wasn't ready. After a few questions from the front desk—whether I preferred a quiet room and whether I needed an accessible room—my room suddenly became available. Since my only request was to be on a higher floor and to give housekeeping sufficient time to clean properly, I wasn't in any hurry. I headed upstairs to the second floor—not exactly the higher floor I had requested, but not a deal-breaker. What followed was a surprisingly confusing journey through a maze of hallways, fire doors, staircases, and directional signs. Given the hotel's history of a major fire several years ago, perhaps the abundance of fire doors is understandable. Still, navigating to my room felt more like finding my way through an office building than a boutique hotel. The final stretch was the most jarring. The hallway leading to my room was dark, dated, and honestly a little creepy. It felt more like an old roadside motel than the curated experience the Wayfinder projects elsewhere on the property. Fortunately, the room itself was a pleasant surprise. It was bright, spacious, nicely furnished, and immediately recaptured the boutique atmosphere missing from the hallways. Although I wasn't on a higher floor, my window overlooked a tree-lined road, which provided a pleasant view. The closet setup—a simple rod with hanging space—felt unconventional and perhaps intentionally minimalist. I didn't mind it, though some guests may find it a bit odd. The room seemed impeccably clean until I conducted my usual bathroom inspection. Turning on the fluorescent overhead light revealed a noticeable amount of pink mold in the shower grout. While not a health hazard for a one-night stay, it immediately raised concerns about cleanliness. I tried to rationalize it—perhaps a ventilation issue, perhaps something that developed quickly—but it was hard to ignore. I stopped by the front desk and asked if they had some bleach available. The staff member was friendly and offered to have someone clean the shower while I was out. I appreciated the willingness to help and left feeling optimistic. The hotel sits about two miles from downtown Newport. It's a quick Uber ride away, and the property also offers a shuttle service, which is a thoughtful amenity, though you'll need to work around their schedule. I didn't use it, so I can't really comment on the experience. When I returned later that evening, a bottle of cleaner had been left in my room. It wasn't bleach, but I appreciated the gesture and gave the shower a thorough spray anyway. While it didn't accomplish much, it at least made me feel better. As many other reviewers have noted, the bed was comfortable. Once guests settled in for the evening, hallway noise diminished considerably, and I slept well. The unusual layout continued to nag at my curiosity, so I looked up the property's history. Sure enough, I discovered the hotel was once a Best Western. Instantly, everything made sense. Considerable investment has clearly gone into transforming the property, and in many respects the renovation is impressive. The designers did an excellent job creating an appealing aesthetic where they could. The challenges, however, remain largely structural. The exterior and floor plan may never fully align with the boutique experience the hotel is trying to deliver, but neither is a deal-breaker. The area that truly needs more attention is housekeeping—specifically the bathrooms. Guests seeking a boutique hotel experience expect exceptional cleanliness, and visible mold in a shower undermines an otherwise positive impression. I'm genuinely rooting for the Wayfinder. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and clearly invested in creating a good experience. It's not that I wouldn't recommend the hotel—I would. I just think guests should understand the compromises involved. With a little more attention to maintenance and cleaning, this property could move from "good effort" to genuinely impressive.
