I’ve stayed at this hotel several times when attending conferences at Stanford University. I am a Marriott Titanium member and am used to receiving bonus points and coupons for breakfast (when the hotel doesn’t have a lounge). This time, I was offered the choice between bonus points and breakfast — never had that happen before! Otherwise the hotel was as usual: good location, decent rooms (although the mattresses are not great if you suffer from back problems), nice food, and of course lovely weather.

“Clean, large rooms with a large bathroom”

Stayed here for 3 nights for business, spending time at Stanford. Didn’t get a room immediately as I checked in at 12pm. This was fine but I never received an email to tell me my room was ready (as they can’t send a text message to a non-US number). Didn’t spend too much time at the hotel except for sleeping, apart from a couple of sessions In the bar with colleagues. The bar, drinks and food, was well priced. Pool looked great but didn’t get a chance to use it. Bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very large and modern. The shower in particular was large. All in all, a good stay.

“Sleepless in Palo Alto”

I was “upgraded” to a first floor room with a water feature right outside my room. As a solo traveler and a light sleeper, this was probably one of the worst options that I could have been given. When I called the front desk asking to switch rooms, they would not accommodate due to being fully booked. I travel a lot and have gold level status at several hotels. I have never been denied being moved. I am sure they could have switched my room with somebody who has not checked in yet. So now I will spend $600 a night to not sleep. Additionally, the rooms need a refresh.

“Nice hotel, good location, not great when a visiting sports team is in town…”

This is a lovely, large, sprawling hotel. There’s a nice pool, an airy lobby, a restaurant and a bar. It’s a typical Californian Sheraton. The rooms are spacious and fairly well appointed. On arrival we were upgraded because of our Bon Voy status and that was appreciated. The parking cards work and there is plenty of onsite parking. Our main concern was security. Lots of sports teams playing Stanford, and fans and family of those teams, stay here because of the location. The night we were there, Duke had played Stanford and won. The hotel was full of Duke supporters. They decided to really enjoy their night. No problem with that at all, but they decided to party in the corridor of the ground floor for hours and into the small hours of the morning (2am at least). So not in the bar or a public area, but literally outside bedroom doors in the corridor on the ground floor in the nearest building to reception. When we shushed one group, they would slowly meander off only to be replaced by another. It went on for hours. Incessant, loud, drunk talk. Reception must have known because we heard the groups coming through reception drunkenly and talking to reception staff. Plus they were loud enough to be heard streets away. This massively disrupted our stay, and should have been (politely) dealt with by hotel security. But that security seemed to be non-existent. This was really not good enough. We have marked the hotel down accordingly. It’s a nice hotel in a great location but needs to make sure the experience is right for all guests not just the sports fans. (No disrespect to Duke - you guys were having fun, but you should have been moved on).
