My daughter and I booked an overnight stay here because it was the 2nd highest rated hotel in Kingsland, according to TripAdvisor. And the town's highest rated hotel - Spark by Hilton - is relegated to my "avoid it" list because, frankly, the Spark brand is too stark. I don't appreciate a bare bone… more

My daughter and I booked an overnight stay here because it was the 2nd highest rated hotel in Kingsland, according to TripAdvisor. And the town's highest rated hotel - Spark by Hilton - is relegated to my "avoid it" list because, frankly, the Spark brand is too stark. I don't appreciate a bare bones hotel which promotes itself off as trendy. The Baymont was a disappointment beginning at check-in. The hotel should hire a receptionist who can at least pretend a modicum of hospitality toward arriving guests. She had to tear herself away from watching a really creepy movie which filled the lobby with a dark vibe, in order to greet us with a blank stare. No "Welcome to Baymont Inn," or even a hint of a smile. And the woman spoke so fast after handing us our room keys that we had no idea what she said. When I asked her to repeat, she recited the wi-fi password and breakfast hours, from 6-9. We opened the door to our assigned first-floor room, which boasted zero personality. Gray, brown, and faded yellow are the colors of the day. The layer of dust on top of the wardrobe shelf was thick (and the hangers themselves were dusty), while hairballs spawned hairballs underneath the AC unit. The bathroom was adorned with a mildew stripe at a seam a few inches above the floor of the fiberglass shower (no tub here). Speaking of bathroom, when we turned on the exhaust fan to keep the humidity at bay after showering, a nauseating sewer smell arose from the shower drain. I had to cover it with used towels to protect our sniffers from the odor while we slept. And speaking of towels, they were fairly wimpy in size and thickness - not what I expect from the Wyndham brand. Interestingly, guests assigned to rooms in the back of the hotel will walk directly through the facility's laundering room to get to the lobby, which is the only place to find a cup of coffee, or else walk outside around the entire building. There is no coffee maker in the rooms. We were constantly uncomfortable temperature-wise because the AC would not maintain a consistent temperature. If we set the thermostat at 73 degrees, the air ran nonstop until we were burying ourselves in blankets to keep warm. But if we bumped it up to 74 degrees, it never kicked on and the room felt muggy and hot. No happy middle ground. The room wasn't designed to accommodate typical furnishings. There was one folding luggage rack and enough room to put another small suitcase on the floor. Part of the problem is that the desk chair doesn't fit at the desk. When facing the desk, there isn't room to walk between the chair and the bed. And if the chair faces the side of the desk, you can't get the outside door open half way. And speaking of door, the security hinge was dangling lopsided on ours. There are no blackout curtains, so don't plan on sleeping late. There were, however, a few upsides to this Baymont, which is why I rated it three circles. We heard no exterior noise in the room. The beds were very comfortable, and the wi-fi was sufficient speed for normal use. The toilet/shower room is separate from the sink, which facilitates simultaneous usage for two female guests sharing a bathroom. Amenities include a hair dryer, iron and board, microwave, mini-refridge, small TV, and a 3-drawer chest for clothes storage. Lighting was plentiful overhead, at bedside, and at the desk. (No night light though). Electrical outlets are in short supply in the room, and one of the desk lamp outlets was malfunctioning. My daughter took a dip in the outdoor pool and said it was clean and pleasant. There was no poolside shower. She checked out the fitness room too, which was "cute." All rooms are exterior facing, so we were able to park our car right outside our door, which is necessary since there are no luggage carts for guests' use here. Insider tip - don’t leave your room door ajar while unloading bags because the hotel parking lot is adjacent to a forest, and flying forest critters can find their way into guest rooms. We swatted several gnats and no-see-ums, as well as a huge, winged, queen carpenter ant, before feeling safe enough to turn out the lights at bedtime. Also, there is no elevator to the second story. You'll climb stairs to a 2nd-floor room. We don't eat complimentary breakfasts at hotels, so I can't comment on quality, variety, etc. When departing, I turned in room keys just before the 11:00 checkout deadline and wasn't thanked for choosing to stay at Baymont Inn. But I'd already decided that I won't book this hotel again for future overnight visits in the area.
