The good - the grounds and pools are amazing and every staff member I interacted with was helpful and kind. The staff at the pool in particular made extra effort to learn my name and were great about checking in. The poolside drinks were great. Are they expensive? Yes. Is that unexpected or unusual for Hawaii? No. The food I had poolside was also good. The nightly turndown service was great, and while I had some bugs that were in my room (my fault, wanted to hear the ocean waves the first night and attracted critters), I didn’t have that issue any of the subsequent nights. The room itself was clean and my ocean view deluxe room had a fantastic view of the property. The concierge helped me to book a sunset cruise that helped meet my needs as I opted not to get a rental car this time and needed something with transport and also didn’t want to spend time going all the way to the harbor. Shout out to Kai Kanani for fitting the bill. The so-so - I do agree that so many of the big properties have a better welcome service with leis, juice, etc. The Marriott and four seasons are equally large properties and have a more welcoming arrival experience. With that said, the gentleman who checked me in was lovely and detail oriented. It is a very kid friendly resort. I found the adults only pool was a nice respite but I agree with reviews that you do have to get out early to get a chair with cover if you need protection from the sun. At one point there was a guy who brought his child into the adults only pool - I am assuming he either figured it out or told them they needed to get out, but per my point below, I think the pools could be staffed differently. There are pools with a lot of children, and if you’re looking for a fully zen environment with no kids, this isn’t it. I do think in general the pool side set up could be better. You have to find a spot to get towels and while I understand the property is massive, again, I think the Marriott and Four Seasons have a better pool side set up in this regard as they have dedicated pool chair towels and it’s much easier to get towels, etc. Overall, it was a great stat and the view from my room was amazing.
