Have been going to Shutters on the Banks for many years - even before they were called Shutters! This place use to be Colony IV by the Sea. We have only stayed in the Tower building so not sure about the rooms on the pool side. We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of June. The rooms are clean - I am the type of person that checks everything in the room after I check in, and uses my own sani wipes for the remote control, handles, etc. The room has a coffee station, microwave, and small refrigerator. Perfect for our two gallons of water. We had a room with two Queen Beds this time - room 227. This is on the second floor. There are stairs AND an elevator. The bathroom is small but very functional for two people. The Ac worked fine and was very cold when needed. The beds are another story though. My husband am I could not sleep in the same bed as the one closer to the balcony door literally had a deep indentation on one side. He wound up sleeping on that one and had a back ache every morning. The bed squeaked and made weird noises every time he turned/moved. The balcony had a view of the dunes and a sliver of the the ocean. We could also see people walking back and forth from the beach, passing the gazebo where there is an outside shower. The view, for me, was fine. I didn't mind not seeing the ocean as we could hear it fine. The resort has a corn hole game set up which is fun. This time, we used the pool and hot tub and everything was great. There is an indoor and outdoor pool. They also provide towels at the pool. There is a restroom near the pool. The front desk folks were absolutely wonderful - great customer service and very attentive. The breakfast is the standard make your own waffles, eggs, bacon, bagels, muffins, yogurt, juices, and coffee (decaf and regular). This would have been a perfect trip except for the bed. I sent an email in response to the receipt that they sent me, but never heard back. I asked to speak with Ron, specifically (manager). I was hoping to talk to him before posting anything. Overall, a good place to stay but needs some minor updates. I would stay again but only in one of their king sized bed rooms. We have had these rooms in the past and the mattress's have been excellent.

The location was absolutely perfect! The breakfast is low-grade unhealthy for the most part. The room service is lacking attention to detail. Mostly, towels were refreshed and garbage taken out. Sheets changed once which was fine. That was about it. We were there over a week and not once was the toilet tub or sink cleaned. I cleaned my sink out as I brought Clorox wipes with me, but I did not bring a toilet brush or cleaning supplies. The price was reasonable. The Dune walking from the ocean back up to the accommodations is unfit for many people as we watched people struggle. A staircase might be a good idea. I had to clean all of the pans because particleboard was broken underneath the cupboard and nobody bothered to clean it up. There are cobwebs the pictures and the rug should either be totally taken out and replaced with flooring or at least vacuum vacuumed.

I'm a 78-year-old disabled veteran, and my stay at Shutters on the Banks in Kill Devil Hills was a very disappointing experience. I booked through Expedia and was assigned Room 202 on the second floor. I have a documented back condition (I also have NC handicapped plates), so a supportive mattress isn't a luxury for me-it's a necessity. Unfortunately, the mattress in this room was in very poor condition: overly soft, worn out, and completely lacking support. After just one night, I woke up on May 12, 2026, in significant pain. It was clear the room was not suitable for my medical needs. I respectfully requested to cancel the remainder of my stay and asked for a prorated refund of the $1,358.67 I had paid, along with the release of a $50 incidental hold on my debit card. Management denied my request. What made matters worse was how dismissive the response felt. I was told the mattress is a Sealy Posturepedic and only two years old-as if that somehow outweighed the actual condition of the bed and the pain it caused (photo attached). Brand and age don't matter when the mattress is no longer supportive. I'm sharing this so others-especially seniors, veterans, or anyone with back or mobility issues-are aware. I expected basic understanding and customer care given the circumstances, but that was not my experience here.

“Average wouldn’t stay here again”

Nice room, beautiful views. Breakfast is mid… housekeeping terrible don’t expect service… flys flys flys… bring your swatter they are driving us crazy.
