First off, before you book this hotel be aware that is not a Marriott hotel. I booked on the Marriott website using my Marriott Bonvoy account. I had two Marriott gift certificates, which I called the hotel directly to ensure would be honored and was told that they would. When I checked in they were not. I was told this is not a Marriott but an MGM hotel. This was disappointing to say the least. The whole check in experience was ridiculously chaotic- it took well over an hour to get a room, and the lobby was overcrowded with people waiting for rooms and one overworked manager doing his best to help everyone. When we finally got to our room it was clean, comfortable and spacious but had no view at all- just the wall of another building. If a view is important to you make sure you ask for one. There was also no fridge- it was suggested that we use the ice bucket to keep things chilled. The bathroom was large and well-appointed, but the shower had very low water pressure. Housekeeping came every day and did a nice job. The hotel is right on the strip and a lot of fun, tons of shops and restaurants (nothing is budget friendly but it's Vegas) and of course a casino with lots of table games - even a $5 Blackjack table. I'm giving it four stars because it was clean, comfortable and by Vegas standards a good deal.

My wife and I recently spent three nights (over a weekend) at the New York - New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The hotel is located in the southern end of the Strip. We were there in advance of a tour of the Mighty Five national parks in Utah and picked the hotel as it was one of the two designated pickup spots for the beginning of the tour. We booked the hotel through the Southwest website and the total cost was $980 for the three nights. The hotel has a fitness center and outdoor pool, neither of which we used. Regardless, our bill included three days’ worth of $45 daily resort fees. (Apparently, this resort fee add-on scam is common in Las Vegas.) The registration desk is tucked away in a quiet corner of the lobby. We were advised that the hotel could be noisy (a roller coaster runs around the complex) and asked for a quiet room. Check in was friendly and efficient. We had to traipse across the casino floor to get to our room in the New Yorker Tower. The room (1476) faced the strip and overlooked the end loops of the roller coaster. (See pic.) TIP: According to the elevator, there is no 13th floor, so we were on what would normally be the 13th floor. Our room was adequately sized and had a contemporary decor, with one accent wall that looked to me like it was designed by Jean-Michel Basquiat. (See pic) On one wall was a large flat screen with a padded bench underneath. There also was a narrow combination closet (with an iron & ironing board) and open shelf (with a safe). Along the window was a small table with two upholstered chairs. Blackout curtains were behind the drapes. The king-size bed came with four king-sized pillows, which were nice and firm. The bed was fairly soft, yet comfortable. There was a night stand (with phone) on one side of the bed. The wall above it had two electric outlets, a USB port, and a USC port. A wall-hung lamp was also there. All this was only on one side of the bed - no table, outlets or light on the other side of the bed! The two-room bathroom was huge. The first room had a narrow shelving/combination. The separate single sink had more than adequate counter space. Private label MGM Resorts hand soap and body lotion were provided. A lighted magnifying make-up mirror and hair dryer were mounted in the wall. The commode and tub shower combination were in the second room. Wall-mounted MGM-branded body wash and conditioning shampoo were in the shower. Water pressure and temperature were fine. We wished there were more towel bars in addition to the standard hotel one over the commode. And the TP was the thinnest we’ve come across in a while. (But it did the job.) TIP: The tub bottom was very slick, so we used a hand towel as a substitute bath mat. The hotel offers a green option, involving reduced maid service. (See pic.) Conspicuously absent were a fridge and coffee/tea station. Breakfast was not included, but there are several restaurants attached to the casino. (Most open at 7am.) Or just walk out to the Strip. As for the “quiet” room. At night, the clanking of the roller coaster and the screams of the riders as they rode the loops was very noticeable. (Supposedly the coaster doesn’t run after 11pm.) Plus the cycling of the AC was a bit loud. Finally, we could occasionally hear planes at the nearby Harry Reid airport. So much for a quiet room. One final note. The ice machine on our floor was out of order. We tried to visit another floor for ice, but the room key security pad in the elevator would not let us visit another floor for ice. No ice for us, but at least we knew the security procedure worked. Overall, we found our room to be adequate and comfortable and it served its purpose. But if we were to return to Las Vegas, we would try another hotel, perhaps more north on the Strip. For more specific details and pictures, visit the hotel’s website.

Took my mom on a short Vegas trip, and we decided to try out NY NY for the first time, and it was okay. Check-in was a pain. We wanted to be on the same floor, so we got in line to check in, which was short, but their roaming agents with tablets say they can help you - which they can (to an extent) and then start helping other people, making it so you have to wait to speak to them again. We asked to be on the same floor, but because we had two different room types, they said we couldn't. So we asked to be on close floors in the same tower, which the agent said we could do. She said we'd get a text message, and then to use the kiosk to check in...well, we were not on close floors, so we had to wait to speak to her again (she was helping other people), and 5-10 minutes later, we were in the same tower. Went down later that evening to get a spare key for my mom's room (more on that soon), and since they manually changed my mom's room, we had to wait to have someone do it for us. We told this person we couldn't be on the same floor (and she shook her head...meaning we probably could, but we already settled into our rooms). Elevators are also a pain because you have to use your key cards to select your floor, but if you don't within a few seconds, it'll often bypass your floor. I had to help out an elderly couple, and it took me from my floor down to the first when I was trying to go to my mom's floor (I wasn't quick enough at inputting her floor). It's nice for security, but a pain in the butt. As for the rooms. Both of ours were weirdly designed. My mom's was clearly less than the advertised 350 sq feet (probably closer to 300) and felt cramped, but it had a nice, large bathroom. On the other hand, my double queen room had enough room for three king beds; it was so long, but with a super tiny bathroom. After the last bed, there was a small couch with literally an open area that would be big enough to do a full workout, and no TV in that area. With the laminate flooring, it actually echoed because of all the empty space. I think most rooms are different in size because of the architectural design of the towers - so be aware that what you see on their website isn't representative of most rooms. With that said, the rooms are remodeled nicely, sans the bathrooms and small round tables (barely large enough for a laptop). What I like best about NY NY is the location (right next to Park MGM with the tram to Bellagio), and Excalibur, with the tram to Mandalay Bay, plus MGM Grand right across the street - so you can't beat that. The casino is fun, lively, and always upbeat. And they probably have some of the best affordable food options in the area. We always hit up Greenberg's Deli, which has an excellent hot pastrami sandwich, which is always amazing! Probably wouldn't stay here again due to the confusing check-in process, not being able to be on the same floor, and the weird room layouts. With its recent refresh, Excalibur is a good budget option in the area. MGM Grand just remodeled some rooms, and that's a good choice. And for smoke-free and location, you can't beat Park MGM. Lots of better choices, but we wanted to try out NY NY. Also, be aware that if you don't want to hear the roller coaster (which goes till midnight), make sure you ask.
