We had a great experience at Avania Inn of Santa Barbara. We were in Santa Barbara helping our daughter move in for college. We had originally been staying at another hotel and had already checked out with plans to head home, but we realized we needed to stay one more night. I booked Avania at the last minute. When we arrived, the Guest Service Agent let us know that the bed type we had reserved had been oversold. He was genuinely apologetic, but what stood out was that he and a manager had already recognized the issue and had a solution ready before I even walked through the door. It was clear their priority was making sure guests left happy, and their customer service reflected that from start to finish. The room was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The location is another big plus as it’s just a short walk to the harbor, making it easy to enjoy the waterfront and surrounding area. While the bed mix-up could have been frustrating, the way the staff handled it completely changed the experience. Their professionalism, communication, and commitment to customer service made all the difference. I would definitely stay here again.

“Great Location with Pastries”

It was a great location as I didn’t have a car. I walked to the waterfront, wharf, State Street and Funk Zone. The room was clean, comfortable and had a very large balcony. What I loved the most were the pastries from a local bakery with their continental breakfast. The staff was great.

My wife and I were in town for the wedding of some friends. We stayed 3 nights in mid-July 2026. The Avania Inn has great potential to be a five-star stay. They're also on the edge of becoming an over-priced three-star stay. It really feels like a place where the good stuff could easily become great stuff if someone was minding the details. Let's start with the good stuff: The location is really great. It's walking distance to the harbor, the beach, the wharf, restaurants and all the Santa Barbara things. The front desk staff is super friendly and attentive. Parking was good though it fills up at the end of the day. The lobby and breakfast area is nice and kept clean. The metal railing on the balconies have recently been redone and are very nice. The air conditioners are newer, quiet and work really well. It seems to have pretty thick walls so the rooms are quiet. The stuff that needs attention: The first thing that hit us was the smell in our room. We suspect that the people before us did something that required a quick carpet clean. With a full hotel on a weekend night, the room was placed back in service before the carpet could properly dry and air out. We walked into a musty, damp dog smelling room. Bad first impression. That was probably the worst of it. The rest of the things were just little details that were either shortcut to save money or not considered properly: hot tub coating was peeling and gave a green tinge to things; the toilet paper was quite possibly the cheapest toilet paper available in America; the breakfast was mostly pastries and some of the European guests were under the impression it was a full breakfast (eggs, etc.) so the morning staff was taking some heat that could have been avoided with good communication; speaking of good communication, they left a note on the door of our room about every third-day cleaning but the note was so long that it felt not worth reading - I'm sure this was also a challenge for the many non-English speaking guests. Some of the guests seemed like people trying to get out of LA for a nice weekend of partying, while others were probably construction workers put up by their employer who smoked and drank in the parking lot at all hours - none of this caused too much drama during our stay, but it all has the potential to be a bad environment if not monitored - and the one employee on site at night plus the closed office midnight to 7am meant that monitoring wasn't a thing. Bottom line: It's more affordable than some of the beachside places and it's worth a stay. I hope the management team can keep working on the details. They're either really close to having a gem or really close to putting millions into a hotel that is on the way back down. We loved so much but saw the gaps.
