After doing a lot of research on hotels close to the Alamo, I chose this Springhill with cautious optimism. The caution turned out to be unwarranted. Every part of the stay, from check-in to the valet to breakfast, exceeded my expectations. Outside of two rude staff members who tried to shoo people out of the pool well before closing, everyone working at the hotel was helpful and pleasant at the level you would expect at a four-star property. The room was immaculately clean and had a great view of the downtown (and one wall of the Alamo complex). The hotel itself does not sit on the Riverwalk, but is still conveniently located only a couple of blocks away from the Alamo and entrances to the Riverwalk. My only word of caution to those expecting a "sofa bed" is that you're actually going to get a trundle cot that pulls out from under the couch, rather than folding out from the top of it. This was a non-issue for me, but my kids didn't want to sleep on it because it's essentially a mattress in a drawer at floor level. Be aware that a chaotic breakfast area seems to be the norm at this hotel, so much so that they put flyers in the elevators explaining what times of day have higher crowd levels. We did visit on Memorial Day weekend, so it was probably even more chaotic than usual, but it is the only property I've ever had to wait in a queue ten minutes just to make a waffle. Even so, the breakfast staff kept everything smooth, clean, and well-stocked. When it was time to leave, valet had my car pulled out of the lot and parked in the portico in less than five minutes. For a hotel close enough to walk to everywhere in downtown San Antonio, without suffering the nosebleed prices of those directly on the Riverwalk, this property is a winner all the way around.

This wasn't our first time staying at this location. As a matter of fact, we stayed in the adjoining Fairfield last month. I appreciate the added space the Springhill Suites offers, and while the building is beginning to show its age, it is still clean, comfortable, and has a friendly staff. The major pluses are the added room, comfortable beds, good AC, and great hot showers. But the best is the level of the included breakfast! The only drawback back, and it seems to apply to ever hotel in downtown, is the steep cost of valet parking. Especially when all that entails is pulling your car around to the parking lot in back of the building ( We walked out the back door and passed it every time we walked to the Alamo or Riverwalk). Overall, this is where I'll stay when here on casual trips, but on a special trip we will be at the Gunter.
