Disappointing Stay That Falls Well Short of Five-Star Expectations We stayed at Centara Mui Ne to celebrate my wife’s birthday and, unfortunately, our overall experience fell well short of what we expected from a property marketed as a five-star resort. This was particularly disappointing given our previous excellent experiences with the Centara brand, especially Centara Grand at CentralWorld Bangkok. Before arriving, we advised the hotel that this stay was to celebrate my wife’s birthday and that we are both lacto-vegetarians. As Centara members, we had also requested an early check-in, which we were advised would be accommodated. Unfortunately, our arrival set the tone for much of the stay. Despite arriving at around 1:00 pm, our room was not ready until after 2:30 pm. Reception was chaotic, several staff appeared inexperienced, and there was little visible management presence to support the team or communicate with guests. One of our first positive experiences came from Mr. Bao, who kindly offered to show us around the large resort before taking us to our room. His friendliness, professionalism and initiative made an excellent first impression. Unfortunately, the room itself had clearly not been fully checked before our arrival, as the safe was locked due to flat batteries. Although this was resolved quickly, it reflected a lack of attention to detail. The room was comfortable enough, but both it and the wider resort felt tired for a relatively young property. The grounds showed signs of poor maintenance, with dirty outdoor furniture, weeds and a general lack of upkeep that simply didn’t reflect a five-star standard. We also experienced almost no water pressure on our first morning, making it impossible to shower properly until the issue was resolved. Dining was initially our biggest disappointment. Despite informing the hotel of our dietary requirements before arrival, breakfast on the first morning offered very few suitable vegetarian options. Lunch continued the same pattern, with staff acknowledging that vegetarian choices were very limited. We repeatedly had to explain our dietary requirements, despite them having been provided when the booking was made. However, this is also where the resort’s greatest strength became apparent—its people. Throughout our stay, Miss Thi, who managed the restaurant, consistently took ownership of our dietary requirements and did everything possible to ensure we were looked after. Miss Thuy, at the barista station, was always warm, attentive and welcoming, while Miss Moon was equally helpful during breakfast and lunch service. These three ladies consistently demonstrated the level of hospitality that we had hoped to experience throughout the resort. One aspect of the resort that also deserves recognition is its digital guest communication platform. Throughout our stay, the in-app messaging service and call centre team responded promptly to our requests and were generally efficient in taking action or passing information to the relevant departments. It is an excellent system and made communication easy. Unfortunately, despite the speed of these responses, there often appeared to be a disconnect between the information being communicated and its execution on the ground. Once again, it reinforced our impression that the frontline teams were doing their best, but that stronger management oversight and coordination were needed. By our second and third breakfasts, the team had clearly understood our requirements and prepared exactly what we had requested. Our final dinner was genuinely excellent, with well-prepared vegetarian dishes, a beautifully presented table overlooking the entertainment area, and a birthday surprise for my wife that included a cake and a thoughtful acknowledgement from the live band, thanks to Miss Thi and Miss Van. It was a lovely end to our stay and demonstrated what this resort is capable of when everything comes together. One disappointment remained throughout the stay: despite the repeated service issues and the hotel knowing this trip was to celebrate my wife’s birthday, no member of senior management ever approached us to ask about our experience, acknowledge the occasion or simply check that our concerns had been addressed. We never felt that management was actively engaged with guests, even though the frontline staff were working incredibly hard. To the hotel’s credit, our request for a late checkout until 2:00 pm was accommodated without issue, which we appreciated. Overall, our experience was mixed. The frontline staff were consistently friendly, caring and genuinely committed to delivering excellent service. In particular, Mr. Bao, Miss Thi, Miss Thuy, Miss Moon and Miss Van deserve recognition for their professionalism, kindness and hospitality. They are a credit to the resort. Sadly, they appear to be working within a property that has the foundations of an excellent resort—including caring staff and effective guest communication systems—but lacks the consistent management, operational oversight and attention to detail needed to deliver the seamless five-star experience that the Centara brand is known for. We leave with fond memories of the people who looked after us and genuinely hope the resort succeeds, because with stronger leadership and better coordination, it has the potential to be a truly outstanding destination.
