“Tropical paradise”

We were eight couples traveling in the south coast of Bahia and stayed at this inn for four days. It is located near the beach, but has a somewhat difficult access to the village, which could be interesting for those who want tranquility. Friendly hosts and staff, nice rooms, and superb meals.

Viking Inn is tucked away amidst the palm trees and sandy roads in Taipu de Fora, a spectacular stretch of coast on the Peninsula de Maraú. It's a modern, stylish boutique hotel with rustic touches, built around a large, immaculately clean swimming pool, complete with a poolside bar and plenty of deck chairs in which to relax. There's a games room too with a snooker table to help you pass the time. It's only a short stroll to the beach, however you'll probably find it difficult to tear yourself away from the pool, particularly when you taste the cocktails. I had a coconut batida served to me while I was swimming, and I have to say, it was one of the most delicious drinks I've ever tasted. There's a restaurant on site which serves a hearty breakfast buffet with fresh breads, cakes and fruit, as well as a diverse menu of mid-priced lunch and dinner options. The owners Henry and Janete are so lovely and friendly - they drove us to nearby Barra Grande to show us their favourite beachfront bar to sit and watch the sun set. Henry speaks excellent English, which was extremely helpful. It was lovely to sit in the restaurant and chat with him over lunch, and hear his stories about his move from Sweden to Brazil and what it's been like to build a pousada in Bahia. The rooms were spacious, modern and comfortable, with all the comforts you'd expect - air conditioning, fridge, cable TV, premium bedding and a roomy balcony overlooking the surrounding nature. There are bicycles to rent if you want to go exploring too. All the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome and well taken care of. Viking Inn is a wonderful place to wind down and spend a few relaxing days away from it all.

We spent 4 heavenly days at the Viking Inn Boutique Hotel. We visited for my birthday, as part of a three month sabbatical in South America. After weeks of staying in more basic hotels, this hotel was a real treat. The beach is about 7/8 minutes walk away, with the natural pools either another 10 minutes or 30 minutes walk along the beach (there are two different places with natural pools). The beach itself is stunning. Whilst not the best snorkelling I have ever encountered, the water is clear and very warm and you can see quite a lot of tropical fish. Make sure you go at low tide as when the tide is up the waves are too big for snorkelling and the reefs are too far below the surface. With a car or quad bike you can go to other beaches or the town. The beach near Barra town was nice, with calm waters, but we preferred the one near the hotel. We hired a quad bike one day which was fun but were generally happy to have a quiet, relaxing few days by the beach and pool. Our room was simply furnished but reasonably spacious and had a covered private patio with a hammock. Aircon was good and the room was cleaned daily. We came in low season and had the hotel pretty much to ourselves for the first few days. That was the best part! We ate at the restaurant nearly every night as there are no other options within walking distance. This wasn't a problem for us - the food was very tasty and beautifully presented. For a small hotel in the middle of nowhere, there was a very good range of options on the menu, including at least one vegetarian option. At breakfast on my birthday the restaurant presented me with a large slab of very tasty cake covered in icing and sprinkles. I was also given 2 free cocktails for my birthday. Breakfast was also excellent with lots of choice. The food prices are not cheap but in comparison to other places (for example, local beach bars) we thought the prices were very reasonable. They also serve tea, coffee and cake in the afternoons which was really appreciated! The staff and owners were very nice. Only the owners and the waiter could speak English, but we got lots of smiles from the other staff. That was fine by us! The only possible improvements I can think of would be an ice cream / ice lolly fridge (maybe using an honesty box system) and a mineral water tank. One very minor criticism is I thought the daily cost of hiring a snorkel from the hotel was high (20R) - it's the sort of thing I would expect to be able to hire on payment of a deposit only. So if you can, bring your own snorkel. However I don't know how this price compares to elsewhere; it could well be a decent rate. All in all an excellent stay.
