Gran Canaria: A world to discover

Gran Canaria: A world to discover

Gran Canaria is a genuine “miniature continent” with a mild temperature all year round. It’s the island of open doors, a mixture of cultures and fantastic beaches. You can travel through its 15.00 square km. from the steep northern coast, extinguished volcanos and prehistoric forest of Laurisilva, vestiges of the Tertiary Age, to defiant central peaks, crowned y the Picos de las Nieves with a height of 1.949 metres. It is a land of great contrasts, with a vast coastline of multicoloured sand and calm waters, deep cliffs, deserted spots, lovely gardens, unique sand dunes and a vast number of charming places to visit. Discover an exceptional natural environment classified by the UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.

Visit the picturesque villages and cities of elegant colonial architecture, ancient traditions and marine touch and discover the eclectic culture and delicious gastronomy.  During a long and sunny day, you have a vast number of outdoor activities. At dawn, rediscover a new land full of good atmosphere, fun and happiness.

Meet El Dedo de Dios

El Puerto de las Nieves used to be the island's main port. In the 19th century it was substituted by puerto de la Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria but it has managed to keep its charm and its traditions. Nowadays, it is a beautiful fishermen's port, filled with little houses painted in blue and white and colourful balconies. It is an ideal destination to relax, watch the boats go by and taste the best fish and seafood of the island in the family-run restaurants located on the promenade's shore. In la Ermita de las Nieves you will find a tryptich in honour of the Virgin. You can also take a boat to Tenerife from here. You can see the famous Dedo de Dios (God's finger) that has an amazing view of the Gran Canaria west coast. Surfers usually prefer punta de las Viejas. If you prefer deep-sea fishing, ask any of the local fishermen if they will take you with them. You will probably always remember Agaete's locals sympathy and hospitality.

Christopher Columbus' secret love

Gran Canaria is still today a multicultural crossroads. In the past, it was considered the last place before going deep into the ocean. Many suggest Columbus chose the Canarian route not only because of the favourable wind. His decision to choose Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Gomera instead of choosing ports with greater infrastructures still generates a debate amongs historians and locals. Many books talke about a lover: Beatriz de Bobadilla, member of the Spanish Court. Casa-Museo de Colón is living proof of this historical admiral's link to the island. It is located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in one of the island's most beautiful buildings. A replica of La Niña and the Sala del descubrimiento are a must see in the museum.

The mysterious guanche origin

Travel to Gran Canaria and follow the guanche's footsteps! The Island still conserves numerous traces of the thousand-year-old culture, one of the first to ever inhabit the island, an exceptional heritage you cannot miss out on. Today, the origin of these prehispanic settlers is still a mystery. Some have found links to the Egyptian culture because of the mummification process used by the guanches. Nowadays archaeologists still discover guanche objects around the Archipelago. We recommend a visit to the giant silo of Cenobio de Valerón; Parque Arqueológico de la Cueva Pintada de Gáldar, where you can see displays of aboriginal paintings; the guanche remains of Tufia, Cuatro Puertas, Túmulo de La Guancha and Museo Canario.

Welcome to the party!

Gran Canaria equals culture, music and folklore, fun and entertainment. Experience the traditional festivites celebrated almost on a daily baises in the island's 21 towns. Experience Easter; visit Arucas during the Corpus Christi festivity; get lost in the Carnival's joy in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or Maspalomas... When the sun goes down, the island revives, offering tourists endless entertainment and leisure options. Enjoy the busy night life! The pleasant climate will allow you to enjoy the outdoor terraces, some of the with a sea view, located in the historic city centre or in welcoming interior courtyards. Gran Canaria also has numerous bars, pubs and afterhours, discotheques and cainos where the fun is guaranteed. Choose from all sorts of trends and atmospheres.

Embark in a journey of a thousand flavours

Many think the best way to get to know a place is through its food. In Gran Canaria you will embark in a journey of a thousand flavours: a combination of traditional dishes and daring modern flavours that result in unique gastronomical experiences. Taste the local fish and seafood cooked in a stew with potatoes and sweet potatoes and seasoned with the aromatic mojo. We recommend trying La Vieja, the Canary's signature fish, the home-made vegetable stews and the tasty fish soups. For meat-lovers we recommend baifo (goat meat), veal, chicken and rabbit meat. If you are looking for a more gourmet experience, we recommend a good Gran Canaria wine and a quality cheese: the flower cheese. On the dessert table you can find the famous Canarian bananas, mangoes and papayas. Gran Canaria is also land of delicious liquors. We sugget honey rum or Cobana, a rum made of bananas. Bon apetit!

Gran Canaria, a haven on land and in the sea

Upon us is an endless sea of possibilites. The crystal-clear water of the 236 kilometre coast and the fascinating ocean floor make, diving, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing a unique experience in Gran Canaria. Swim amongst the whales and the dolphins whilst exploring a ship wreck! With an average temperature of 18-22ºC it is impossible not to go swimming, no matter if its winter or summer. Discover water sports, a fun way of keeping an active lifestyle and are demanded by tourists. Take advantage of the ideal winds the island has to offer and practice your surfing, windusrfing and kitesurfing skills. Gran Canaria has excellent facilites and nautical services. Enjoy a swim in the middle of the sea and visit the most intimate calas. On the way back to your hotel, you will have a wide variety of restaurants, terraces, clubs... Welcome to Gran Canaria, an haven on land and in the sea!
