It was at the initiative of a prominent figure of the time, Mr Jeremias da Conceição Dias, that Marvão was endowed with its first hotel establishment. The heir of a house adjoining the residence of the neighbouring verger, he built and set up an inn there, to which he gave the suggestive name of "Ninho D' Águias" (Eagles' Nest), operating with five rooms. About 10 years later, it was extended to eight rooms, taking advantage of the extensive balcony to install a restaurant, where guests can enjoy the magnificent view. In 1992, after a 15-month closure for expansion and refurbishment, the inn reopened with 28 double rooms and one suite. LOCATION AND DESTINATION Begin your trip by paying a visit to the medieval walls and castle. Then visit the Municipal Museum, inside the Church of Santa Maria. Come to Marvão during the Feira da Castanha (Chestnut Fair) in November or the Al-mossassa Festival – Islamic Festival in early October. One of the great attractions of the area is the Portagem Leisure Centre that has a river pool, just off the Sever River. Take advantage of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park for activities like hunting and fishing, or go for a walk on the footpaths and do some birdwatching. In Portalegre, you will find many points of interest such as the Sé Cathedral, the José Régio Museum House, the Tapestry Museum and, if you are a wine fan, there are also numerous cellars to visit. Visit the Apartadura Dam, just 12 km away.
